Poorly Thoughtout Life

Real Estate Novelist

One of the most hit songs by Billy Joel, Piano Man, is set up in the Executive Room bar in Los Angeles. Billy Joel, whose original name is William Martin Joel, had a conflict with his recording company in New York, as a result of which he moved to LA and played at the bar to pay his bills.

Brilliantly captured in the song are the emotions of familiar faces. An old man drinking gin trying to remember a song he knew by heart in his youth. John, the bartender, who is a friendly, jovial fellow, wishes to be a movie star secretly.

Next we find Paul and Davy

Now Paul is a real estate novelist Who never had time for a wife And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the navy And probably will be for life

I got curious with the lyrics. What is a real estate novelist?

Paul is a real estate developer, who in his frequent visits to bar would spurt out the stories of the novel he wants to write but never has the time or courage to act on it. Billy Joel takes a jibe at his situation.

Poor Paul.

Jerry Seinfeld would’ve said the same thing. How do people live like that?. That’s the thing with successful artists.

Found this line in an Adele song yesterday, which is what Paul’s reply would have been.

Go easy on me, baby
I was still a child
Didn't get the chance to
Feel the world around me
I had no time to choose
What I chose to do

Also, something our present selves would tell our future versions when they're being harsh.
